You’ve likely heard the lyrics, “…only fools rush in” from a song by Elvis Presley. The song is about falling in love but the title alone is fitting for this month’s tip from Earthling Interactive. How is that, you ask?
Whether building or implementing web systems to solve business process challenges or building a revenue generating web application, we’ve seen what happens when companies are tempted by rushing to build “it”.
What does “rushing in” sound like?
- It’s a great idea, if you build “it” they will come.
- I found a product management software that also does CRM, accounting, and HR. Buy it?
- This ERP has all the features that I think we need
- We have to replace our dashboard reporting in MS Excel.
Don’t misunderstand, our technologists / developers at Earthling Interactive are driven to solve challenges. But, rushing in to build it will more often than not result in a failed or less than desirable execution and user adoption. Instead, take a measured approach before you rush in to build it:
- Use an objective assessment process to evaluate options -SaaS platform, custom or a blend of the two. Here is our process.
- Gather feedback about current process or challenges from a representative group of users or stakeholders
- Assess the market you are serving and prepare a marketing communication plan (Yes, this applies whether internal or external users.)
Be open minded to change as you learn information
Address and plan for change management
The only constant in life is change, and in the world of software, that change is a constant innovation.
