CASE STUDY
Madison Area Chamber of Commerce
Dije is a platform for action. It is designed for the community to build upon and is rooted in a belief that Greater Madison can be better. Data is the centerpiece of the platform. This data portal aims to provide the insight and impetus to accelerate this region as a prosperous, welcoming and inclusive place while bending the arc of disparity within our workplaces and community.
CHALLENGE
The Greater Madison Area Chamber of Commerce works tirelessly to help organizations within Greater Madison Area to meet their full potential. From increased growth to improved decision-making, studies have consistently shown that focusing on diversity and inclusion drives results. With this in mind, the idea of the Dije application was born.
Dije is focused on building Greater Madison as a place of belonging while bending the arc of disparity in the workplace and beyond. It is centered and guided by a 60+ CEO Roundtable comprising the region’s largest and most prominent employers. These CEOs have identified five pillars of work: Convene, Attract, Connect, Track and Grow. Dije focuses on the Track pillar.
Employers that meet certain criteria are obligated to submit their demographic data to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) annually. The reports filed are protected from public disclosure which prevents their use in 3rd party applications. The lack of available data can hinder businesses’ efforts to understand the demographic makeup of their specific regions or areas of operation.
Although the EEOC has a standard method of collecting demographic data, there was a recognized need for a clearer and more user-friendly user interface. This interface would enable non-technical users, such as HR professionals or managers, to easily navigate the data submission process and submit their demographic data accurately and efficiently. By improving the user interface, businesses can streamline the data collection process, reduce the potential for errors, and enhance the overall user experience when reporting their data.
Another significant challenge faced by businesses is the presentation and interpretation of the demographic data they collect. Raw data alone may not provide meaningful insights to stakeholders who need to understand the information quickly and easily.
The final objective of the project was to support privacy. The data collected would need to be presented such that one employer could not directly identify another; this need also extended to the ways in which the data is stored and accessed.
