Envision Outdoor Living

Spending much of their marketing budget on a printed catalog, they needed to convert the paper version to an online catalog to save on production and printing costs. We developed an online quote-building tool for their entire railing product line to support their sales team. The tool uses WooCommerce and a quote-builder add-on, which Earthling Interactive customized extensively, to allow users to select their product(s) and submit their quote, which emails Envision representatives so they can contact the user with the estimate for their project.

CHALLENGE
To ensure the new quote-building and sales tool met expectations and usability requirements, we actively sought direct feedback from a representative set of the system’s users.

The marketing team at Envision Outdoor Living needed a partner to help them build this tool according to the expectations of their users, some of whom were not excited about an online counterpart to the paper catalog.

SOLUTION
A customized usability assessment, conducted remotely, with a volunteer pool of product sales reps and wholesale distributors.

Earthling’s Research team developed a remote, moderated, task-based usability test to get open and honest feedback about the online tool during the development cycle. This effort’s placement meant we could quickly shift to directly address any feedback, bugs, and issues and improve the whole experience.

After completing the moderated tests, we began the analysis. We meticulously reviewed every second of the session recordings, extracting valuable insights and snippets of feedback. The result is an appropriately detailed report providing the proper content depth for executives and implementers.

RESULTS
The insight gained from actual users was far superior to what we would have achieved by guessing their needs. We implemented 90% of the recommendations during the remaining development sprints, which led to a much better product.

After reviewing the report results and recommendations with Envision, Earthling set out to implement the fixes, functionality changes, and improvements to the website. The resulting user experience process and flow are perceptively faster and streamlined, which is what the users of this system expect.
